Sands Beach Road in Port Royal closing. Here’s the problem — and when it will reopen
Sands Beach Road will be closed for several days to fix a failing pipe that was causing the road to one of the county’s most-popular beaches and boat landings to fail.
Town Manager Van Willis said a pipe is being replaced under the road.
The pipe, Willis said, began failing, and water infiltration was causing the road to fail as well.
“We have to fix the pipe,” Willis said Tuesday, “and then address the road issue by reconstructing that section and applying new asphalt.”
The road was scheduled to close at noon Tuesday and reopen by midnight Thursday.
Sands Beach Boat Landing, once of the county’s busiest, also will be closed during the work.
In September, the landing was closed for a few weeks while Beaufort County replaced it at a cost of $148,687. Eastman Marine Construction of Ridgeland was awarded the contract for the work.
