Flags at city buildings in Hardeeville were flying at half staff Tuesday in honor of Councilman David Spisso, who died Monday, the city announced Tuesday on its Facebook page.

Details regarding Spisso’s cause of death were not immediately available.

David Spisso, who was in the last months of his second term, was first elected in 2014 before serving as mayor pro tem in 2016.

“Councilman Spisso was quick to tell everyone that ‘Hardeeville is my hometown’” city officials wrote in the post.

Spisso grew up in New Jersey as the child of Italian immigrants, according to his council member page. In 1967, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he later became a pilot, earning his wings. After 25 years of service, he retired.
