Here’s how to make your voice heard on DOT’s modified US 278 plan for Hilton Head bridges
Hilton Head Island has a chance to tell the S.C. Department of Transportation what it thinks about the state’s newly modified $290 million construction plan for the U.S. 278 corridor.
SCDOT published its updated plan online this week. It can be found here: bit.ly/US278Meeting
Transportation officials will hold a public meeting from 4-7 p.m. March 3 at the Island Recreation Center, 20 Wilborn Road, so people can weigh in on the modified plan, which is known as the “preferred alternative.”
The formal comment period for the meeting runs from Thursday to March 26.
Residents can attend the meeting, submit a response online at bit.ly/US278Plan, email info@scdot278corridor.com or send a letter to Craig Winn c/o South Carolina Department of Transportation Lowcountry Regional Production Group, 955 Park St., Room 401, Columbia, SC 29202-0191.
The preferred alternative was initially released last summer, drawing fierce criticism from some Hilton Head residents, including people concerned about the proposed elimination of left turns at major island intersections and impacts to the historic Stoney community.
The state has now updated its preferred alternative based on last year’s community feedback and recommendations from a town-hired land planning consultant.
What did residents say in 2021?
SCDOT last summer received 546 responses about the project during a public comment period from early July to late August.
