Demonstrations marking 1-year anniversary of Capitol insurrection set in Beaufort Co.

Rallies to mark the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots will take place Thursday in three separate venues.

The three Indivisible groups of Sun City, Beaufort and Lowcountry are organizing the demonstrations, which will take place from 4-5 p.m. in Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island.

Lowcountry Indivisible chair Mitch Siegel said this is not a protest, but rather showing support for three things: democracy, the U.S. House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, and members of the police force who descended on the capitol during the attack.

“This is meant to be a sign of positivity,” he said.

The rallies will be held:

Bluffton County Offices, 4819 Bluffton Parkway

Beaufort City Hall, 302 Carteret St.

Sea Turtle Marketplace, 430 William Hilton Pkwy, Hilton Head Island

According to Siegel, there are around 20-30 progressive groups in both gated and non-gated communities who have worked with the Indivisible groups for this event, as well as different liberal groups.

At least 11 South Carolinians have been found to have participated in the insurrection out of more than 650 who have been arrested from almost every state.

The events are open to the public.
