SC election to fill the late Sen. Hugh Leatherman’s seat scheduled for spring 2022

A special election to fill the unexpired term of the Florence County Senate seat that was held by the late state Sen. Hugh Leatherman is scheduled for March 29.

Leatherman, a Republican who served as Senate Finance Committee chairman for about two decades, died Friday at 90 years old. He had inoperable cancer. He was in his 11th four-year Senate term prior to his death.

If necessary for both, primary elections will occur on Jan. 25 and runoffs will be Feb. 8, the office of Senate President Harvey Peeler, R-Cherokee, announced Tuesday.

Candidate filing opens noon Dec. 3, and will run until noon Dec. 11.

The Pee Dee region’s Senate District 31 covers parts of Florence and Darlington counties.

So far, no candidates have announced intentions to run.

With Leatherman, Republicans held a 30-16 majority in the Senate.

Leatherman’s funeral is scheduled Friday afternoon at Francis Marion University in Florence.
