Want new faces in Hilton Head government? Which seats are up for grabs and how to file

Three Town Council wards are up for election on Hilton Head Island this fall.

On Nov. 3, residents in wards 1, 3 and 6 will vote for representatives. Marc Grant, David Ames and Glenn Stanford, respectively, currently hold those seats on Town Council. The election is nonpartisan, which means candidates will not claim a political party when they file.

The filing window for candidate opens at 8 a.m. on July 31. Candidates have until noon on Aug. 17 to file to run.

The three wards up for election this fall represent half the island.

Ward 1 runs from the base of the Hilton Head bridges to the airport area and Mathews Drive area.

Ward 3 runs mid-island and includes Spanish Wells, Wexford, Long Cove, Shipyard and Palmetto Bay Road.

Ward 6 includes parts of Hilton Head Plantation and Port Royal Plantation.

Candidates must live in the ward they are filing to represent. They must be registered to vote in the Town of Hilton Head Island.

The candidacy filing form will be available at Town Hall.

Candidates should bring a photo ID and a $35 filing fee. Due to COVID-19, candidates should call (843) 341-4604 and make an appointment to file their candidacy paperwork.

Candidates who will be unable to appear in person during the filing period and wish to file by agent may contact the Town Records Administrator for instructions.

Town Council members sit on the seven-person council and make decisions that affect the whole island. The council is currently discussing issues such as parks and recreation, affordable housing, funding for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and beach rules.

Town Council members make $12,800 per year, according to town code.

All questions on candidacy filing may be directed to the Town Records Administrator, Lindsey Rambow, at 843-341-4604 or lindseyr@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.

Note: The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette will profile candidates once they file to run for their respective offices. Local and state candidate guides will be available online throughout election season.
