Hilton Head Island Mayor John McCann was injured in a fall at his Port Royal Plantation home Saturday, according to a town news release.
McCann, 79, was carrying boxes up a flight of stairs when he fell and injured his right elbow and hip. He was hospitalized and underwent surgery on Sunday.
He is now recovering and will begin physical therapy this week, according to the release.
Mayor Pro Tem Bill Harkins, who represents Ward 2, will step in to perform McCann’s duties while he is recovering.
There is a town council meeting on Tuesday, over which Harkins will preside.
McCann asked for privacy while he recovers and will not be taking phone calls, the release says.
