A solo fisherman’s cries for help led to his rescue from a gooey mudflat in the nick of time as the tide rolled in, Alaska firefighters reported.

Other anglers heard the man shouting for help and called 911 on Friday, Aug. 15, Girdwood Fire & Rescue said in a news release.

They guided firefighters to the trapped fisherman, who was mired up to his waist in a mudflat along Ingram Creek on the Kenai Peninsula, rescuers said.

With the tide coming in, firefighters worked to free the man from the mud, where he was “very stuck,” rescuers said.

By the time they freed the man and returned to a parking lot, water had covered the place where he was trapped, firefighters said.

“Reminder mudflats can be unpredictable,” firefighters said in the release, advising people to know how to self-rescue, call 911 early and inform others about mudflat dangers.

Girdwood is about a 40-mile drive southeast from Anchorage.
