A dog affected by the deadly Central Texas flooding is on the mend with the help of a shelter and countless volunteers.

Mallory, a sweet dog, had already gone through a lot before the flooding that began on July 4, Austin Pets Alive said.

“Mallory lived in a house in San Saba with another dog and 22 cats. Her owner passed away a couple months ago, and a housekeeper had been feeding the animals every day until the rivers flooded,” the shelter said in a July 23 Facebook post.

“In the midst of the chaos, no one could reach Mallory and the other pets for several days — meaning they were likely scared, confused, and without food and water during that time. APA! brought all of these animals to Austin, including Mallory, who is safe but understandably shaken up.”

Animal shelters have been working around the clock to help pets in Hill Country that have been injured or lost. In Kerr County, Kerrville Pets Alive has been working to return the ashes of a dog lost in the flood to his family free of charge.

“Like so many pets and people affected by the devastating floods, Mallory’s recovery is not over just because the flooding has stopped,” the shelter said.

“Sweet Mallory is extremely nervous and shut down, preferring to lay quietly most of the day in her foster home. She is getting treatment for her anxiety after what she’s endured, as well as medication for skin and ear allergies. This brave girl has patiently tolerated a bath and vet visit, even perking up a little when she gets to ride in a car!”

San Saba is about a 105-mile drive northwest from Austin.
