Woman found dead in capsized boat after waves slam it into rocks, Alaska officials say

Waves slammed a boat onto rocks near Sitka, then capsized it, killing a woman aboard, Alaska police reported.

A 911 caller reported the overturned boat at about 8:25 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, near Three Entrance Bay, Sitka police said in a news release.

A police emergency rescue boat already en route to another call responded about a half-hour later, police said.

A nearby boat had already picked up two men thrown into the ocean when the boat capsized. The men, ages 42 and 56, were taken to a hospital.

A U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer deployed by helicopter found Deanna Moore, 51, inside the capsized boat. She was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Sitka is a city of 8,400 people about 580 miles southeast of Anchorage on the Alaska coastline.
