Walmart shoppers flee gunfire as woman hit, Arizona cops say. ‘Everybody was terrified’
Terrified shoppers fled a Walmart store in Phoenix after gunshots rang out, injuring a bystander, Arizona police reported.
“It was definitely chaos,” shopper John McCracken told Arizona’s Family about the incident at 3:30 p.m. local time Tuesday, June 7.
Three men got into argument at the store and were leaving when one man turned back and fired into the store, Phoenix police said in a news release.
Onlookers described hearing at least three shots, KNXV reported.
One shot hit a bystander, a 45-year-old woman, inside the store, police said. She’s expected to recover, police said.
Shoppers and employees evacuated the store.
“To see how the crowd came out of the store and how terrified they were, and everyone was grabbing their kids and everybody was terrified because he was randomly shooting,” Veronica Hernandez told KPNX.
An off-duty officer working at the store detained Diontay Evans, 18, who faces aggravated assault charges, police said.
“It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it,” shopper Mary Lapsley told KPNX. “When is enough going to be enough?”
