14-year-old swept away in raging river near campground, Washington sheriff says
A 14-year-old girl was swept away in rapid river waters near a campground in Washington while a 20-year-old was found stranded on a rock in the river, the sheriff’s office said.
Rescuers responded to a water rescue around 4:15 p.m. Pacific time Sunday, May 22, at the Lake Creek Campground in Entiat, Washington, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said.
A 20-year-old man from Wenatchee was stuck on a rock in the middle of the river, the sheriff’s office said.
Forty rescuers responded to the campground and saved the man from the rock around 8 p.m.
The teen’s body was also found downstream in the “fast-moving water,” deputies said. A helicopter was used to recover her body from the water.
It’s unclear if the rescues were connected. Authorities did not release their names.
Entiat is in central Washington, about 20 miles north of Wenatchee.
