The age of the iPod is officially over, Apple announced on May 10, and while the news might not come as a shock, many are finding themselves feeling emotional about saying goodbye.

“I haven’t used an iPod in years, but I still don’t like this news,” a Twitter user wrote.

Starting with the first edition in 2001, a chunky little gray box with buttons, iPods quickly slid into the pockets, backpacks and waistbands of millions over the following years, growing sleeker and more colorful with each release.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said in a release.

But as smartphones and smart watches grew in popularity, trusty MP3 players became increasingly unnecessary.

Like hearing an old friend has died, people are stricken with memories and the good times they shared. Was the iPod not a trusty companion? A tiny device, with all your favorite tunes, ready to go with you whenever and wherever.

While Apple won’t be making any more iPods, there are still some iPod Touch units up for sale at Apple.com and Apple stores.
