80 puppies, dogs living in filth rescued from ‘overwhelmed’ Georgia owner, groups say
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it rescued 65 dogs from an “overwhelmed” owner in Georgia on April 23.
Staff rescued the animals, including several puppies, after they were found “in substandard conditions” at a property in Hancock County, about 60 miles northeast of Macon, according to a news release from the ASPCA.
The Atlanta Humane Society and Hancock Animal Friends helped with the rescue by providing responders and veterinary assistance, according to the ASPCA.
Hancock Animal Friends said in total, 80 dogs were rescued from the property, according to a Facebook post. The group had already removed several dogs and puppies earlier this month, according to the ASPCA.
Hancock Animal Friends said the owner had started by trying to rescue a few strays. After many litters over the years, she soon found herself with 80 dogs on her property.
“Lots of hard work and tears yesterday but it got done,” staff wrote in a Facebook post. “Dogs were rescued and this person is able to get their life back knowing there are people out there who can and will help.”
The Atlanta Humane Society took 29 animals into its care, according to its Facebook post. The shelter said many of the dogs need medical and behavior support before being made available for adoption.
The ASPCA said the remaining dogs were taken to an emergency shelter where they will be treated to prepare them for adoption.
The dogs suffered from mange, overgrown nails and parasites, among other medical issues, according to the ASPCA. The organization said one dog also had a broken limb and another had conjunctivitis.
