Child’s mask melts on face after firework hurled at Las Vegas Strip crowd, cops say

A child suffered second-degree burns after a driver tossed a firework at a crowd on the Las Vegas Strip, police said.

Jonathan Arriaga, 19, is accused of hurling a mortar firework at people standing near The Mirage in Las Vegas on Jan. 3, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and KSNV.

The firework caused the child’s surgical mask to melt on their face and burn the bridge of their nose, the news outlet reported.

Both the child and another bystander suffered second-degree burns, KVVU-TV reported.

Arriaga was caught on a surveillance camera throwing another firework at a Chevrolet Corvette from his white Ford Mustang, police said.

Police said they arrested him on Jan. 11 eight days after the incident, according to a tweet.

“I tried to throw it in the area where there wasn’t too many people,” Arriaga said, according to KSNV .

He was arrested on charges of battery with a deadly weapon, using an explosive to damage property and possession of an explosive device, KSNV. reported.
