Blue water on U.S. 278? Miniature golf?

If you saw the Smurf-blue water staining U.S. 278 near Buckingham Plantation on Monday in Bluffton, you might have thought to yourself, “Wow, that looks an awful lot like the water in the lagoons on a putt-putt course.”

And you would have been right.

A five-gallon container of “blue water dye” — bound for a local miniature golf course — fell off the back of a truck Monday around noon in the eastbound lane of the highway, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Capt. Bob Bromage.

The office’s environmental crime unit investigated the incident, Bromage said, and determined the dye was not toxic.
