Victim of May River Road crash identified as Bluffton woman

The victim of a two-vehicle, head-on crash on May River Road at Buckwalter Parkway early Wednesday has been identified as a 25-year-old Bluffton woman.

Heather Kerwick was pronounced dead at the scene after the wreck was reported around 8 a.m., according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

The wreck involved a pickup truck towing an enclosed trailer driven by Mark Heintschel of Bluffton and a Jeep Patriot SUV driven by Kerwick, according to Lance Cpl. Matthew Southern of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Heintschel had a minor passenger inside the pickup, the Highway Patrol said.

Kerwick was traveling westbound on May River Road when she drove left of center and struck Heintschel head-on, Southern said.

She was not wearing a seat belt, Southern said.

Heintschel was taken by Beaufort EMS to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for minor injuries. His passenger was not injured.

The crash is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
