Driver in fatal Hilton Head Island collision identified
The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office identified the driver killed in Monday’s crash as 81-year-old Michael Simmons.
Simmons, of Hilton Head, died from injuries sustained during the crash after he was taken to Hilton Head Hospital.
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. when Simmons pulled into the path of a westbound Dodge as he drove south on Union Cemetery Road in a Chrysler, according to Lance Cpl. Judd Jones of the SC Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Dodge, Johanna Garcia, 31, was treated for minor injuries, Jones said, and a female passenger in the Dodge was not injured.
Simmons’ death brings the total of vehicle crash fatalities to eight in Beaufort County this year. Three of those deaths happened on Hilton Head, according to the Coroner’s Office.
