Man charged with DUI after falling asleep behind wheel
A Minnesota man was charged with driving under the influence Saturday after authorities found him asleep at the wheel of his pickup truck on Hilton Head Island.
Deputies came across the man stopped in the center lane of William Hilton Parkway at its intersection with Gumtree Road around 2:50 a.m. Saturday. They found the truck's driver asleep, slumped forward with his foot on the brake and truck still in drive, the report said.
The truck's doors were locked, so the deputies knocked on the windows for several minutes until the man woke up. He immediately drove off, turning onto Gumtree Road and into the parking lot of First Presbyterian Church, the report said.
The man told the deputies he was diabetic, but a blood sugar level test by EMS showed he was not having a diabetic episode. Smelling of alcohol, he refused to take a sobriety test and was charged with driving under the influence, the report said.
