A fatal crash on S.C. 170 shut down traffic heading toward Beaufort for nearly two hours Thursday.

The crash involving a sedan and a pickup truck near the highway's intersection with Okatie Center Boulevard occurred around 11 a.m. Thursday morning, shutting down northbound traffic, Bluffton Township Fire District spokesman Randy Hunter said. Southbound traffic was detoured around the wreck.

Traffic reopened around 12:45 p.m., according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office traffic management department.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Bob Bromage said one person was killed in the wreck. Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said he could not release the identity of the victim because next of kin had not been notified.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is handling the investigation into the crash.

No other information was available from Highway Patrol late Thursday.
