100-year-old Hilton Head man identified as victim, driver in fatal crash

A 100-year-old Hilton Head Island man is dead after a single-car collision on Hilton Head Island on Wednesday.

Gene Mayfield was identifed Thursday by the Beaufort County Coroner's Office as the driver of a 2005 Dodge Magnum that went off the left side of Birdsong Way in Hilton Head Plantation and struck a tree around 2:10 p.m.

Mayfield was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Lance Cpl. Hannah Wimberly of the SC Highway Patrol.
