Update: US 278 lanes reopen after pickup truck flips in Bluffton collision
Update: Both lanes of U.S. Highway 278 had reopened as of 4:10 p.m. Thursday, according to traffic camera views.
Officials shut down the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 278 after a pickup truck overturned in a collision Thursday afternoon.
The crash happened around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 278 (Fording Island Road) and Lost Oaks Drive, in front of the Vaden Nissan Hilton Head car dealership.
Both eastbound lanes of U.S. 278 were closed as first responders handled the scene, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in an alert sent at 3:25 p.m. Thursday. Police said drivers should expect delays and exercise caution in the area.
Two tow trucks arrived at the scene just before 4 p.m., a Beaufort County traffic camera showed, and the truck that overturned had been pushed back onto its wheels. Another pickup truck with significant front-end damage was seen at the site of the collision.
Haley Frazier, a spokesperson for the Bluffton Township Fire District, confirmed two trucks were involved in the collision and said first responders had to extricate one person following the crash. Frazier said she could not comment on potential injuries or hospitalizations.
Traffic data as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday showed significant congestion on both sides of the highway in the area of the crash. A Bluffton fire truck was seen blocking both eastbound lanes of the highway while eastbound drivers were diverted onto the opposite side of U.S. 278.
This report will be updated.
