Update: Traffic flowing after box truck crash blocks highway near Sun City Hilton Head

Update: Traffic was flowing smoothly in one westbound lane of S.C. 170 as of 2 p.m. Thursday, traffic cameras showed.

A crash involving a box truck shut down both westbound lanes of S.C. Highway 170 (Okatie Highway) around noon Thursday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

In the area of S.C. 170 and Sun City Boulevard, a Beaufort County traffic camera showed a box truck with front-end damage blocking both westbound lanes of the highway as of about 12:30 p.m. Another truck was seen on the sidewalk at the side of the road, partially in the treeline.

The extent of injuries from the collision was not immediately clear as of Thursday afternoon. The sheriff’s office asked drivers in the area to seek alternate routes and exercise caution in the area.

As of 12:30 p.m. Thursday, traffic maps showed significant backups on S.C. 170 between Bluffton Parkway and U.S. 278 (Fording Island Road.)
