Hundreds of cyclists may affect weekend traffic on Hilton Head. Here’s where

An annual charity event attracting hundreds of bicyclists is expected to delay weekend traffic on Hilton Head Island, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Starting around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, the 19th annual Pedal Hilton Head Island recreational bike ride will send cyclists across the island and through several private communities.

No roads will fully close for the event, sheriff’s office spokesperson Lt. Daniel Allen said, and participants will mostly stick to Hilton Head’s 60-plus miles of public pathways.

Deputies and state troopers will be stationed at “key intersections” along the event’s routes to help with traffic control, according to police.

The annual recreational bike ride has raised money for the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island for nearly two decades. This year’s participants will choose from six routes of varying lengths — ranging from a 2-mile “family fun” excursion to a 62-mile course that spans the entire island and takes riders across the bridges to the mainland.

Riders are scheduled to embark in waves between 7:30 and 10 a.m. Sunday from the starting point at Lowcountry Celebration Park, according to Pedal Hilton Head Island’s website. The event will conclude with food and refreshments at 10:45 a.m., the itinerary says.

The sheriff’s office asked drivers to remain alert, slow down when necessary and “share the road responsibly” with bicyclists during the event Sunday morning.

Police shared this list of travel routes that are especially likely to be affected by Pedal Hilton Head Island:
