Update: Traffic flowing normally after crash near entrance to Hilton Head

Update: Traffic onto Hilton Head Island was flowing normally as of 1 p.m., traffic cameras showed.

Drivers heading to Hilton Head Island should expect delays early Saturday afternoon after a car crash near the island’s entrance, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The right eastbound lane of U.S. 278 (William Hilton Parkway) was briefly blocked near the entrance to Windmill Harbor as of noon Saturday, police said. The lane reopened about 20 minutes later after at least one car was seen being towed from the scene.

Resulting traffic backups on the eastbound side of the highway extended across the Hilton Head bridges into mainland Bluffton.

Crews were loading a blue Toyota 4Runner with front-end damage onto a tow truck as of 12:15 p.m., traffic cameras showed. The SUV’s airbags appeared to have been deployed in the crash.
