Holiday traffic congestion on both sides of SC-GA border Wednesday
Holiday traffic congestion continued into the late afternoon Wednesday on Interstate 95 near the Georgia-South Carolina border.
As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, live traffic data showed significant backups on northbound and southbound I-95 starting north of Hardeeville and continuing south to the interstate’s junction with Georgia State Route 21.
The slowdowns extend about 7 miles total and were not linked to any traffic collisions, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Motorists’ speeds in the area averaged between 22 and 24 mph.
Wednesday’s traffic backups on I-95 began with a collision around the morning rush hour that shuttered all northbound lanes of the interstate. Those lanes were reopened around 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, according to SCDOT.
Traffic maps also showed backups on the neighboring U.S. 17 (Speedway Blvd) near Hardeeville and on its southernmost stretch into Savannah.
Southbound I-95 is also backed up on the Georgia side of the border, with heavy congestion in areas surrounding the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
Drivers should use caution in the area and seek alternate routes if possible.
This report will be updated.
