Bicyclist hit by car on Hilton Head highway, airlifted to hospital

A bicyclist was airlifted to the hospital after being struck by a car Thursday morning on south-end Hilton Head Island, officials say.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of U.S. 278 (Palmetto Bay Road) and Arrow Road a mile west of the entrance to Sea Pines.

The bicyclist was taken to the Hilton Head Island Airport, where they were flown via LifeStar helicopter to a local hospital, according to Joheida Fister, a spokesperson for Hilton Head Island Fire-Rescue.

The extent of the bicyclist’s injuries was not immediately clear.

Troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol assumed the investigation Monday morning. An SCHP spokesperson could not immediately be reached.

This report will be updated.
