Officials confirmed one death in Monday morning’s crash on U.S. 278 (Fording Island Road) that shut down a portion of the highway in Bluffton for several hours.

The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 278 and John Smith Lane on the westbound lanes of the highway. It involved two pickup trucks, a Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, according to Eydie Moody, a spokesperson for the Bluffton Police Department.

One person was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, Moody said. They had not yet been publicly identified by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Bluffton police shut down the westbound lanes of the highway in the area from approximately 6:30 to 9:45 a.m., diverting traffic on both sides of the crash through Buckwalter Parkway and Buck Island Road.
