Overturned car hauler shuts down eastbound lanes of US 278 in Okatie area
Update: All eastbound lanes of U.S. 278 were reopened as of 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.
All eastbound lanes of U.S. 278 were closed Tuesday afternoon after a tow-behind car hauler turned onto its side on the overpass crossing S.C. 170.
The crash happened around noon Tuesday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. Officials urged drivers to use Okatie Highway as an alternate route and to expect traffic delays in the area.
As of 12:50 p.m., U.S. 278 traffic backups extended west into Hardeeville and east into Bluffton town limits. The on-ramp leading from S.C. 170 onto Fording Island Road was also shut down, leading to additional slowdowns on Okatie Highway north of the high-traffic junction.
Lt. Danny Allen of the BCSO said police were not aware of any injuries as of 12:40 p.m.
