Overturned semi shuts down Okatie Highway outlet, spurs multi-hour traffic jam

A semi truck overturned Wednesday afternoon at a busy junction of S.C. 170, stalling traffic for hours in Beaufort and Jasper counties as crews cleaned up and attempted to move the vehicle.

Large amounts of dirt and debris spilled onto the roadway following the crash around 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of S.C. 170 (Okatie Highway) and S.C. 462 (Lowcountry Drive).

As of 6 p.m., traffic on southbound S.C. 170 remained restricted to the left lane in the area of the crash, and the highway’s outlet with S.C. 462 was completely shut down. Towing crews remained at the scene, along with two dumpster haulers being used to collect debris.

The severity of the driver’s injuries was unknown. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, said Lt. Daniel Allen, a spokesperson for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Wednesday evening commuters heading between Beaufort, Bluffton and Jasper County should expect delays.
