Driver dies after Mini Cooper crashes, bursts into flames near entrance to Hilton Head

An unidentified driver was killed early Saturday morning after their Mini Cooper collided with a tree and burst into flames near the entrance to Hilton Head Island, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of U.S. 278 (William Hilton Parkway) and Squire Pope Road. As a 2013 Mini Cooper headed west on the highway toward the Hilton Head bridges, it veered off the left side of the road, struck a tree, overturned and caught fire, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the SCHP.

The driver died at the scene of the collision, according to the press release.

Staff at the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office had not released the victim’s name Monday as they attempted to contact living relatives, according to Coroner Debbie Youmans.

Data shows the area of William Hilton Parkway and Squire Pope Road is one of the most dangerous intersections in Beaufort County, with more than 100 collisions in less than five years.
