Passenger killed in Jasper County after car overturned and struck tree, officials say

A single-car crash in rural Jasper County killed one passenger early Sunday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Tyrin Brooks, 39, of Estill, was pronounced dead Sunday at Hampton Regional Hospital, according to his obituary. Funeral arrangements were pending as of Tuesday.

The collision occurred around midnight Sunday on Cypress Branch Road (U.S. 601) in the area of Gillison Branch Road (S.C. 652), according to Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. A 2016 BMW sedan with five occupants ran off the right side of the road, struck a ditch, overturned and struck a tree, Bennett said.

EMS crews took the driver and four passengers to the hospital, where Brooks succumbed to his injuries, according to the Sunday press release from SCHP. The status of the surviving occupants was unknown.

The southern point of U.S. 601 starts in Jasper County and the route extends through most of South and North Carolina, including the Estill area. The speed limit at the intersection of Cypress Branch Road and Gillison Branch roads is 35 mph.
