24-year-old Hilton Head woman killed in US 278 crash early Monday morning, coroner says

Officials have identified a 24-year-old Hilton Head Island woman who died after her car ran off U.S. 278 and struck a tree near the entrance to the island early Monday morning.

Juanita Carbajal Moreno, 24, was killed as a result of the single-car crash, according to Rachel Michalski of the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office. Michalski would not specify a time of death or whether Moreno was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The fatal crash happened at 3:24 a.m. Monday as Moreno drove west on William Hilton Parkway toward the Hilton Head bridges, according to Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Near the highway’s intersection with Wild Horse Road, her 2017 Honda sedan swerved off the left side of the road and struck a tree, the release said.

Funeral arrangements for Moreno had not been made public as of Monday afternoon. The crash remains under investigation by the SCHP.

The stretch of U.S. 278 near the entrance to Hilton Head is a hot spot for traffic accidents, some of which are fatal. The parkway’s crossing with the nearby Squire Pope Road is the fourth most crash-prone intersection in Beaufort County, according to data from the state’s department of public safety.
