Jasper County man dead after 4-wheeler collision over Labor Day weekend, coroner says
A 63-year-old from Ridgeland was killed over the weekend after his 4-wheeler collided with a tree, according to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.
John Stephen Mullis was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Sunday night, Coroner Willie P. Aiken said.
The accident occurred just after 10 p.m. Sunday as Mullis drove his red Honda ATV southbound on Sycamore Drive, which runs parallel to I-95 and passes the Camping World RV Sales building in southeast Ridgeland. His 4-wheeler left the road and struck the treeline, the coroner said.
Because they are designed for off-road use, dirt bikes and 4-wheelers are illegal to ride on public roads in South Carolina unless permitted in a parade or special event, according to the state’s department of public safety.
Sunday night’s fatal collision remains under investigation by the Ridgeland Police Department and Jasper County Coroner’s Office.
Funeral arrangements for Mullis had not been made public as of Wednesday.
