A woman was killed in a head-on collision Friday night while driving on S.C. 170 (Okatie Highway) to northern Beaufort County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred at about 10:22 p.m. Friday as the woman drove north on S.C. 170 a 2008 Ford sedan and another driver traveled south in a 2021 BMW SUV, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the SCHP. The vehicles “collided head-on” near the highway’s intersection with Old Bailey Road, about nine miles north of Bluffton town limits.

First responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene while the driver of the SUV was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital with non-fatal injuries, Ridgeway said. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office had not identified the woman as of Saturday morning due to personnel still attempting to contact her next of kin.

Friday night’s fatal collision is under investigation by the SCHP.
