A Hilton Head man was killed in a single-car collision Monday morning when his SUV struck a tree in the Sea Pines community. Staff at the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office believe the accident was medical-related.

John Glenn Campbell, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:56 a.m. Monday after life-saving measures were unsuccessful. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to Coroner David Ott.

Campbell was driving east on Greenwood Drive near Governors Road when his vehicle veered off the left shoulder and collided with a tree around 11:15 a.m., according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. He was the sole occupant of the 2018 Honda SUV.

Monday morning’s crash site was about a mile and a half south of the Greenwood gate to Sea Pines, where visitors pay to enter the gated community. The speed limit is 25 mph.

An autopsy would be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Ott said. Funeral arrangements for Campbell had not been made public.
