Traffic accident on Hilton Head bridge likely to cause delays on Friday morning commute

A truck’s trailer carrying construction debris caught fire Friday morning and blocked at least one lane of U.S. 278 at the Hilton Head bridge.

The right westbound lane is blocked as a Bluffton Township Fire District crew works to quell the flames around 10:30 a.m. Google Maps showed traffic backed up from the bridges all the way onto the Cross Island Parkway.

The fire was contained to the trailer and didn’t reach the truck itself. The trailer is expected to be escorted to the landfill it was headed to, according to Stephen Combs, spokesperson for the fire district.

As of 10:30 a.m., the cause of the fire Is unknown, Combs said.
