What’s causing the heavy traffic on Hilton Head Island? As of Thursday afternoon, the cause was still a mystery.

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies have driven up and down U.S. 278 trying to identify the source of the traffic congestion but could not find one, said Maj. Angela Viens, a spokesperson for the department.

U.S. 278 is backed up on the south end of the island by Sea Pines Circle, said Andrew Davis, the town of Hilton Head’s director of marketing and communication.

“There’s no real reason,” he said. “There just happens to be a lot of people on the island, and they happen to be in that area.”

Traffic is backed up at times all the way to Arrow Road, Davis said.

The town’s traffic engineers are on the scene to assist in keeping traffic moving, Davis said.
