Fender-bender near Hilton Head bridges curbs traffic onto island Thursday afternoon

A fender-bender near the intersection of U.S. 278 and Jenkins Road on Hilton Head slowed rush hour traffic to a crawl onto the island around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The two-car accident blocked the left eastbound lane of Fording Island Road. No injuries were reported, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Sgt. Danny Allen.

As of 4:30 p.m., traffic was backed up to the Tanger Outlets II in mainland Bluffton. Motorists heading to Hilton Head should expect major delays Thursday afternoon.
