Carson James Wohlwend, a 24-year-old man from Beaufort, was killed late Monday night when his truck overturned and struck a tree in unincorporated Colleton County. Friends and family remember Wohlwend as a gentle soul, natural athlete and “restless spirit,” according to his obituary.

Emergency crews were notified of the crash just after 11 p.m. Monday and found a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup overturned at the tree line near the intersection of U.S. 17 and Green Pond Highway, about two miles south of the Green Pond community.

Lance Cpl. Lena Butler of the S.C. Highway Patrol said Wohlwend was driving south on U.S. 17 when the truck swerved off the left side of the road, struck a ditch, flipped and hit a tree. He died at the scene of the crash due to multiple traumatic injuries, according to Colleton County Coroner Richard M. Harvey.

The truck was heavily damaged and “appeared to have been at the location for some time,” according to the Monday release from Colleton County Fire-Rescue. Wohlwend had not been wearing a seat belt.

As the son of two military parents, Wohlwend moved frequently in his adolescence, living in California and Mississippi before calling Beaufort home beginning in 2010. He played football and participated in track and field, becoming a standout hurdler at Battery Creek High School and Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, where he graduated in 2018.

Wohlwend was the son of Natalie Wohlwend, who owns the Bathe boutique in downtown Beaufort. The store announced via Facebook it would be closed on Thursday and Friday.

A church service honoring Wohlwend is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort, followed by a 4:30 p.m. reception at Hearth Wood Fired Pizza on Bay Street.

The Monday night crash is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
