Monday afternoon commuters leaving Hilton Head Island should expect major delays as emergency crews respond to an overturned vehicle Monday afternoon on the bridge above Pinckney Wildlife Refuge.

The accident occurred on the westbound lanes of William Hilton Parkway around 2 p.m. Monday, according to an alert sent from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. One westbound lane of the bridge was open as of 3 p.m. Monday, while both eastbound lanes remained open, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Angela Viens told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.

Major slowdowns could be seen as far back as the Walmart on Pembroke Drive as of 3 p.m., according to live traffic data from Google Maps.

At least one person was taken to the hospital from the scene, Viens said. No fatalities were reported. At least two vehicles appeared to have been involved in the crash, with one turned on its side.

Virginia Marshall, a spokesperson for Beaufort County EMS, could not provide details on the cars involved or the exact number of people taken to the hospital.
