At 3:18 p.m. Saturday, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office released an alert that the eastbound lanes of Highway 278 onto Hilton Head Island were blocked.
The closed lanes were a result of a traffic hazard on the first bridge going onto the island.
Emergency crews were on the scene, and motorists were told to expect delays, police said.
As of 3:46 p.m., eastbound traffic on Highway 278 onto Hilton Head Island was backed up to Malphrus Road.
