Saturday 5K to close roads, slow traffic in downtown Beaufort, Lady’s Island. What to expect
A stretch of road across downtown Beaufort and Lady’s Island will shutter Saturday morning for a waterfront 5K, the Beaufort Police Department announced.
The historic Woods Memorial Bridge, which connects downtown Beaufort with Lady’s Island, will be closed to vehicle traffic Saturday from 7:45 to 11 a.m. for the Flying Angels 5K. The waterfront blocks of Bay Street — from Newcastle Street to Carteret Street — and the northernmost stretch of Youmans Drive on Lady’s Island will also be closed as part of the racecourse.
Organizers are predicting slowdowns throughout the morning due to the bridge’s closure. Runners can park at the Beaufort City Marina but are advised to make plans in advance, according to the event’s website.
Saturday’s event is organized in memory of Madison Klepesky, a University of South Carolina Beaufort student from Pennsylvania who was one of three killed in a Dec. 4, 2021 crash in Jasper County. It’s the first race held in honor of the late runner, who would have turned 20 on Saturday.
