Crash blocks lanes of U.S. 278 Wednesday afternoon near Malphrus Road in Bluffton

A two-vehicle crash blocked multiple lanes on U.S. 278 Wednesday afternoon, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and the Bluffton Township Fire District.

The crash happened before 1:20 p.m. near Malphrus Road, police said in an alert. Both the left eastbound lane heading toward Hilton Head Island and the left westbound Bluffton lane were blocked by emergency vehicles working to clear the crash.

Stephen Combs, a spokesperson for the fire district, said the crash involved a work van and a white sedan. The sedan rolled over multiple times after it was hit by the work van, he said.

The drivers were the only passengers in each car and both were taken to Savannah Memorial for treatment. The driver of the sedan had severe injuries and the driver of the van had moderate injuries, Combs said.

As of 3 p.m. both cars were in the median on U.S. 278.
