A Beaufort man was killed over the weekend after police say he lost control of his car in a Georgia neighborhood, according to the Chatham County Police Department.

Christopher Scantling, 38, was identified as the driver who killed Saturday, according to the Chatham County Coroner’s Office.

Scantling was heading down Garrard Avenue near Lane Avenue, a residential area, around 2:30 p.m. when he lost control of the car, according to Betsy Nolen, a spokesperson for the Chatham County Police Department. The car went off the road and hit propane gas pipes, resulting in six homes being evacuated for about three hours. Scantling was the only person in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, officials said in a Chatham County Police Department news release.

The Chatham County Coroner’s Office would not say when or whether an autopsy would take place.

A funeral service for Scantling is scheduled for 10 a.m. March 21 at the Holy Redeemer Apostolic Church on Duke Street in Beaufort, according to an obituary. He will be buried with military honors at Beaufort National Cemetery.
