A crash Thursday afternoon on U.S. 278 near Squire Pope Road blocked lanes and caused traffic to back up heading onto the island, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened before 5 p.m. and is expected to bog down traffic for the next couple of hours, police said in the Thursday alert. Local traffic cameras show the backup beginning near Moss Creek Drive in Bluffton.
