Traffic is touch-and-go Tuesday morning heading toward Hilton Head Island due to morning construction work on Spanish Wells Road.

The construction on U.S. 278 and Spanish Wells Road had blocked the center and right eastbound lanes of U.S. 278, according to an alert from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The construction work had cleared around 9 a.m., according to Maj. Angela Viens with the Sheriff’s Office. The backup caused by the construction had bogged down U.S. 278 beginning around Rose Hill in Bluffton.

Drivers should use caution in the area, the alert said.
