A driver on U.S. 21 died Monday night in Beaufort County after going off the road and hitting a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Alphonso Brown Jr., 26, of St. Helena Island, was the driver in the single-vehicle crash on U.S. 21, Beaufort County Coroner David Ott said.

The crash happened about 10 miles outside of Beaufort around 10:40 p.m., said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt. Brown was heading north on U.S. 21 in a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis when they went left off the road and hit a tree. Brown was the only person in the car, Bolt said.

An autopsy has not been scheduled as of Tuesday morning, Ott said.

The crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
