Bluffton Police officer hurt in S.C. 170 crash while heading to work, officials say

An officer from the Bluffton Police Department was hurt and may need several months to recover after he was involved in a crash on S.C. 170 Saturday, according to a press release.

Officer Frank Ginn Jr., who has been with the department for at least three years, was heading to work in Bluffton from his home in Beaufort on S.C. 170 around 5:30 a.m. when the crash happened, officials said in the press release.

Firefighters from the Bluffton Township Fire District cut into the patrol car to get Ginn out after the crash.

In a statement on the Bluffton Police Department’s Facebook page Monday, Chief Joe Babkiewicz expressed his gratitude for the paramedics, police officers and firefighters who helped rescue Ginn.

“It is never easy when a collision involves one of our own,” Babkiewicz said. “I thank every first responder who assisted in this incident.“

While Ginn’s injuries were non-life-threatening, he has about 10 to 12 weeks of recovery until he will be fully healed, Babkiewicz said in his statement. Both Ginn and the people in the other car were taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

Additional information about how many people were in the other car, the extent of their injuries and how the crash happened was not available. A spokesperson for the South Carolina Highway Patrol could not immediately be reached.

The crash is under investigation.
