Attention, drivers: Buck Island Road will be closed for a week. What to know.

Attention drivers of cars, golf carts and everything in-between: Buck Island Road will be closed for a week for construction, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said.

Buck Island Road at New Mustang Drive will be closed on Dec. 26 starting at 10 a.m. through Dec. 30, said Tim Johnson, an engineer at J.S. Construciton Services Inc., the company heading the project. The scheduled closing will allow workers time to replace covert pipes for stormwater drainage control that run from one end of the road to the other. Buck Island Road traffic will be redirected down Simmonsville Road.

The Town of Bluffton requested the project on the state-owned road, said Pete Poore, a spokesperson for SCDOT.

“The work is to replace three drainage pipes under the road,” Poore said. “The timeframe was selected because school will be out and there’s a middle school nearby. The intent is to not disrupt school traffic.”

Officials have not announced when Buck Island Road will reopen on Dec. 30, Johnson said.

“Once the pipes are placed, we’ll put the concrete back, then steel plates, then we’ll open the road back up,” Johnson said. “It can’t be done in a single day.”
